Dark Skies, Bats & Biodiversity
Dark Sky Ireland, in collaboration with Leave No Trace Ireland, the Irish Environmental Network, Mayo Dark Sky Park and the Mayo Bat Group, invite you to join us during Biodiversity Week for a FREE fun and information evening.
Schedule:
- Meet at Westport Library and begin by 9pm
- Tea/Coffee to be served * with thanks to IEN/Dark Sky Ireland
- Introduction to Dark Skies from Georgia MacMillan of Friends of Mayo Dark Skies & Dark Sky Ireland
- Introduction to Bats – Mary Roberts of the Mayo Bat Group
- A Walk & Talk at 10 pm along the Greenway from Westport library to Westport House, circling back to finish at Westport Library.
- Finish by 11pm.
As the night draws in, we will start our evening with some information on Ireland’s 9 species of Bats, and the importance of keeping ecological corridors intact for our wildlife. Members of Dark Sky Ireland and the Mayo Dark Skies project will join to explain Mayo’s goal for a dark sky county reserve and to present tools and tips for stargazing when skies are clear. We’ll combine the evening with an easy walk, listening for bats and and if the opportunity allows, we’ll do a little stargazing.
