Participants will meet at the Cnocán Bán site in the Maam valley after which we will return to Kylemore for a talk on Nocturnal wildlife with lunch provided afterwards.
Dr. Margaret Flaherty has been working in the field of biodiversity awareness and public engagement for over 20 years. This experience included work in several or Ireland’s National Parks and Nature Reserves, including the Mayo Dark Sky Park. She has combined this career in learning and engagement with her own studies and holds a PhD in Zoology, a MSc in Nature Conservation and a degree in Ecology. Margaret is passionate about helping to nurture a deeper understanding and appreciation of Irish natural heritage, which she believes is key to protecting nature and ensuring that it can be enjoyed by future generations. She is also an advocate for protecting the nocturnal environment and is actively involved in dark sky initiatives.
In October 2018, Dark Sky Ireland was formed as a national and cross-border partnership of stakeholder groups across the island of Ireland. Our common goal is to raise awareness of light pollution in Ireland and promote the use of responsible lighting through education and the development of a national policy and strategy in the absence of legislation.
Dr Margaret Flaherty will give an introduction to Ireland’s nocturnal biodiversity, how biodiversity can be impacted by light pollution, and the positive steps we can take to protect natural darkness.
