A view of the sky from Emlaghdauroe near the Twelve Pins, Connemara. The image was made by combining 27 separate images to form an "unwrapped" image. Despite the presence of light pollution along the horizon, many stars are visible in this image, which also includes the Milky Way and the diffuse zodiacal light, formed by reflection of sunlight from dust grains in our solar system. This image, taken in Connemara looking westwards towards Clifden shows the impact light pollution has on the night sky. Despite this, the centre of the Milky Way stands out brightly in the sky above, showing the transparency of the night sky away from the clouds. Image © Ray Butler
A fine view showing the bulge and dark clouds towards the centre of our Galaxy taken from the Aughrus Peninsula, Galway. The green glow along the horizon is due to airglow emission from oxygen atoms in the upper atmosphere and is seen under dark skies. © Ray Butler
Taken under the same clear moonless conditions a few nights apart, and with the same equipment, these two photos show the impact of artificial light pollution on sky quality. Research is underway in NUI Galway to measure the scale of light pollution in the west of Ireland, and to select the darkest sites suitable for observing. © Ray Butler
