Heritage Week 2023 – Listening Out For Bats While Looking Up At The Stars

In partnership with The Heritage Council, Dark Sky Ireland invite you to join us during Heritage Week 2023, and take a dusk walk in the grounds of Moorehall House to listen to bats and look up at the stars.

The beautiful ruins at Moorehall, on the shores of Lough Carra, are home to several bat species attracted by the availability of suitable day roosting sites, night flying insects and dark skies. Two of the bat species present here, the lesser horseshoe bat and the brown long-eared bat, are extremely sensitive to artificial light and actively avoid areas with high levels of illumination.

Dr. Kate McAney, Dark Sky Ireland Committee Member and Vincent Wildlife Trust’s Ireland Mammal Programme Manager will lead a walk along the woodland paths and the lake and explain how and why bats navigate and hunt at night. Bat detectors will be available to help identify the bats encountered.

Numbers are limited to 20 and people are advised to wear warm clothes and sturdy footwear and to bring a torch. Children are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult! The walk will begin in the car park at Moorehall at 9pm and finish around 11pm, bats and weather permitting.

This is a free event but booking is essential via the eventbrite link below:
